Many
families fall into the trap of thinking a holiday in Britain needs no
effort but, just because you're still in the UK, it doesn't mean you don't
need to plan ahead. Fortunately, we've got six top tips to help you!
Get your times right Make sure you know the latest check-in time for arrival and departure.
You don’t want to turn up at your holiday destination only to find you’re
locked out for the night. Nor do you want to incur additional expense
if you overstay your welcome. If you’re checking out early but not leaving
till later in the day, have a word with the staff. Most places will
let you leave luggage for collection later. But ask first.
Know what you need to bring with you
Some holiday companies will include bed linen, duvets, sheets, covers,
blankets etc. This varies from place to place so check beforehand. You
don’t want to arrive without proper bedding nor do you want to load
up your luggage with unnecessary extras. Remember, most places will
expect you to bring your own soap, towels and bathroom accessories.
Have a cosy night ‘at home’ in bad weather
There’s nothing worse than tramping the streets in foul weather with
the kids in tow. Before booking, make sure your holiday accommodation
contains ‘home comforts’ such as a colour TV, fridge, heating and kitchen
facilities. That way if the weather turns nasty you’ll be able to enjoy
a family night in.
Know where you’re going
Chances are you’ll be holidaying in a part of the country unfamiliar
to you. Check out the road routes beforehand. Don’t just go for the
quickest – you could end up in a motorway queue. Look at local websites,
especially the holiday company’s own site for the best tips on travel.
If you’re travelling by public transport, find out where the nearest
railway or bus station is. Ask if the company arranges pickups for holidaymakers
or make sure you have a taxi booked if it’s too far from the station
to walk.
Find out what you can hire Why pack away bulky items like surfboards,
wetsuits, bicycles or fishing rods if you can hire equipment at your
destination. Most holiday companies these days will hire out leisure
equipment on a daily or weekly basis. But check before you go.
Relax
A holiday should be a break, not an ordeal. Check with your holiday
company what activities are available for the age groups in your party.
This is doubly important if you’re bringing Granny and Granddad as well
as the kids. And don’t forget to see what’s on for your own entertainment
too.
