Features: Making It Safe For Trick-or-Treaters

boy dressed as a wizardAre you expecting Halloween visitors?

Beware! Gosties and goulies might not be the only things going bump in the night.

Outside safety

  • Clean up outside the house. Don't leave anything out like ladders, hoses, flowerpots or anything a child could trip over.

  • Look after your pets. They can get easily scared or frightened and may even try to bite a strangely-garbed 'intruder.'

  • Use battery-powered candles if you can. If you do insist on using a real flame, place pumpkins well away from where people are standing or sitting.

Indoor precautions

  • Make sure paper and/or cloth decorations are kept well away from a naked flame.

  • Consider healthy alternatives to sweets and chocolate. Low-fat crackers, single-serving cereals and low-fat popcorn, mini-boxes of raisins and packaged fruit rolls will go down well.

  • Be allergy-aware and check with parents before offering treats likely to cause a reaction (nuts, milk chocolate, and artificially-coloured sweets and drinks are common troublemakers).

  • You don't have to give food as a treat. Pencils, stickers, books and comics will be just as appreciated and will last longer.

Follow these rules and it should be a happy Halloween for everyone.
