6 Of The Best: Sleep Facts & Tips For Parents

Physical effects
Side-effects of sleep deprivation can include irritability, lack of physical co-ordination, decreased concentration, depression, a weakened immune system, raised blood-pressure, low insulin production and increased susceptibility to heart disease.

Sleepless nights
Around 50% of the UK population of 52 million doesn't get enough sleep.

How much sleep?
There's no 'right' amount of sleep but most adults need between 9-7½ hours per night. Some studies have found hard-working, inflexible conformists need less sleep than other personalities!

Legendary long sleepers
Sleep-deprived parents can envy Rip Van Winkle and the Sleeping Beauty (100 years each). Woody Allen in Sleeper (1973 to 2173). The Seven Sleepers (3rd century AD to present, interrupted by one brief hunt for snacks).

Catnaps improve alertness and temper
About 90 mins is the optimum length, giving you enough time to run through 1 full sleep cycle, from very light into deep and then into REM (dreaming) sleep.

In case of emergency
Increase your levels of tyrosine (an amino acid which speeds up reaction time and mental processes) with low-fat, high-protein foods. Paradoxically, a quick burst of exercise - even running on the spot - will produce endorphins, raise adrenaline and blood sugar levels, and stimulate your circulation and metabolism.
