Picture Perfect: A Father's Baby Blog (cont'd)
For the past four years, a British father has kept an amazing photographic diary of his children's progess from infancy to school age. We asked Aaron, founder of www.babyblog.co.uk how he came up with the idea to document his two sons with the UK's first baby blog and - more importantly - how on earth he makes the time to publish a new picture every day!
What does your wife think of it? What about other parents?
I give my wife enormous pleasure by writing this - she loves reading it and obviously contributes most of the ideas for material as she is the one who spends most time with them. I've had a lot of positive comments from other parents, some of whom (although I can't imagine why) are regular readers. It's a constant surprise to me that other people read what I've written.
Did you ever worry about the aspect of posting your children's pictures on the net for all to see?
No - Never. I never mention where we live and I never post bath time pictures (or similar).
Do you think your boys will appreciate it when they're older or are you mainly thinking of it as a instrument of torture for when they bring their first girlfriends home?
I stopped writing my eldest's day to day diary when he was 4 - I didn't think there was any need to continue it any longer - because I had written it from his "imagined" point of view and he now has his own (very firmly held) points of view. I don't think I'll show it to them until they are much older.
You're expecting another child in March – will they be added to the blog?
I think so but I'll have to see what kind of time the new baby allows me. Please mail any name suggestions to me. We've already used all our best names with the first two.
What would your words of advice be to any other parent thinking of starting a similar site?
It takes time and effort to do this, but what you gain is a unique record of your children's early childhood - a record that is usually forgotten due to tiredness or buried under nappies and sick.
What's been the best thing you've put on the site and why?
I kept a record of my second child's awake / asleep times during the first month of his life. It makes sobering reading for soon to be parents (click here to read).
If I gave up the writing part of the website I'd still keep up with the daily photograph - I've taken a picture every day of the children ever since they were born. It's an amazing record to have - and it's my favourite bit.
