Picture Perfect: A Father's Baby Blog
www.babyblog.co.uk

For the past four years, a British father has kept an amazing photographic diary of his children's progess from infancy to school age. We asked Aaron, founder of www.babyblog.co.uk how he came up with the idea to document his two sons with the UK's first baby blog and - more importantly - how on earth he makes the time to publish a new picture every day!

You've been doing this site for years. When did you start and why?
I started fairly soon after our first child was born, I wanted to record 'something' but I wasn't quite sure what at first. My parents managed to write a few things down about only one of my three sisters. It's only a few pieces of A4 which detail odd things such as the fact that she used to call the things that live in your eye sockets "eye-bulbs". I wanted to try and do something like this.

When I first started writing, I wrote from my perspective as a parent. However, very quickly it became a lot more fun to try and imagine how the baby was dealing with the world as it developed its own views. I started by writing entries about once a week, but things have gradually spiralled out of control...

One of the major plus points of writing the diary was that it provided a way for us as parents to review the day and pick out the best bits. Even on days where you think everything has gone wrong and that the day has been a disaster from start to finish, there was usually at least one positive thing to write about. I made a decision early on that the bad stuff wasn't worth recording or remembering. Occasionally you'll see a "there is no news today" entry. Don't ask anything about those days - even when we tried to think of something good really hard we drew a blank!

It was also a way to let relatives who were living far away to see a bit of what was going on. All the grandparents live at least 4 hours away and this is a way for them to dip in and out of what's going on when they have the time.

Have you ever missed a day?
I try not to - (which to be fair probably sounds a little obsessive). I do sometimes write two or three days at a time if I haven't managed to scrape together a few minutes on previous days.

www.babyblog.co.ukWhen do you post your news and pictures?
I used to write something for both children and post a picture and update the site every day and I managed to keep this up for at least three years - I don't have that much spare time these days so I generally try write something everyday - whether it's a full entry or just a couple of notes and then I update the website once or twice a week.

What does your wife think of it? What about other parents?
