Baby Naming: Baby Naming Tips

baby with flowerFinding and deciding on a name for your baby is one of the most important decisions you can make for your child. Here are some tips to help you find the right name.

Growing Pains
Will it last? Some names might sound great for babies and toddlers, but remember your child will have to get a job with this name. Try and imagine the name with the words Prime Minister or Doctor in front of it.

Fickle Fashion
Is it too fashionable? Of course, you might not mind about this, but some names can go out of fashion as quickly as they came in – Jordan, Kylie, need we go on?

The Long And The Short Of It
Does it fit with your surname? Sometimes a long surname fits better with a monosyllabic first name – eg: Jose Mourinho, Kate Beckinsale and vice versa, eg: Christopher Guest, Courteney Cox.

A Is For A***
What will your child’s initials spell out? Pity the poor child who goes by the moniker Ashley Sarah Simpson or the unfortunately named Bertie Edward Richard Kay.

Cut Down To Size
Think about how it might be shortened. Your child’s classmates are unlikely to respect your wishes not to shorten their name; be prepared for Catherine going to Katy, Stephen to Steve and Nicola to Nicky.

Spelling It Out
Is the name easy to spell? Giving your child an unusual name can mean saddling them with a lifetime of having to spell their name out.

Of course you could ignore all this and just go with whatever you fancy. After all, having an unusual name hasn’t seemed to hurt any of the following: Peaches Geldof, Summer Phoenix, Madonna, Elvis…Paris Hilton!
