Get Packing: Maximise Space In The Family Car

yellow taxiWill you have enough room to fit the kids and the luggage in your car? When travelling anywhere proper packing is an essential ingredient for a smooth trip.

The more organised your packing the less likely you are to misplace, lose or forget necessary items. When going on road trips use the following tips to help you pack a car in the right way so as to maximise storage space.

  • Clean out your boot. Get rid of everything you won't need on your trip and make sure you free up as much legroom space as possible.
  • Clean up any dirt from the boot, floor mats and upholstery and wash the windows headlights and backlights. Clean surroundings will put family members in a good mood and make them feel more comfortable during the trip.
  • Check the spare tire and make sure you put the emergency kit in last so that it is easily accessible.
  • Pack from back to front. Put the bags you'll need at your destination at the back of the boot. Put these in first. Then place the bags you may need during the trip in last where they can be easily reached
  • Pack the items you are going to need during the trip separately. You may find it useful to have a small holdall in the front with tissues, towellettes, medication, snacks and drinks, and other necessaries during the trip. This will save you having to stop each time you need something.
  • For toddlers, some parents have found it useful to pack a 'three day bag' into which each traveller packs three days worth of clothes. That way you only have to take one suitcase into the hotel with you at night. Combining small children's clothes into one case economises on space and makes things easier to find.
  • Using mesh bags and zip lock bags for items which don't crease economises on space in the boot, as these can be neatly tucked into corners.
  • Stack maps in the order you are planning to use them. Keep them in one place, either the glove compartment or in one of the side pockets, and hold them together with an elastic band so that they don't all separate.
  • Long car journey can get messy. Make sure you take along enough plastic bags and keep emptying the rubbish regularly so as to free up the car.
  • Pack a small coolbox with treats for adults and children which is easily accessible. This will save on money and make travelling by car more fun.
