Children Choose Curry

Toddlers pick curry over chips in new survey

child eating crackerAnyone who thinks that toddlers always prefer the blandest of foods will be surprised by the results of a new survey into toddler food favourites. A survey of 1500 pre-school children by Asquith Nurseries found that the favourite food of 3-5 year olds was curry. One in five children picked curry as their preferred dish of the day – making it more popular than pizzas, pasta or chips.

Proving that one man’s meat is another’s poison, the toddlers questioned put the same vegetables at the top of their Yummy and Yucky lists. Carrots, broccoli and peas were all listed as favourites and the vegetables that toddlers most hate. The favoured drink of the age group was orange juice at 24%, but surprisingly tap water at 18% was much more popular than fizzy drinks with just 3% voting for it.

Children’s food writer Annabel Karmel said, ‘This Asquith research highlights the fact that children, even very young children, are much more sophisticated about their food than grown-ups often give them credit for. Whilst young children will always like foods such as pizza, chips and sausages it's up to us to ensure that healthy options are given preference and presented in ways that appeal. When children are introduced to spicy, flavoursome foods they invariably love it.’
