Parents’ Lunchboxes Policed

Government may offer advice on healthy lunchboxes

breakfastPlans being introduced by the government to improve healthy eating in schools, may extend to parents being told what to put in, and leave out, from their children's lunchboxes.

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly's proposals also include replacing the traditional fish and chips in school canteens on a Friday with salmon fishcakes and boiled potatoes. And, if any kids think that they can head off to the nearest chippy at lunchtime, they'll be disappointed. Plans are also afoot to restrict pupils' movements at lunchtime to prevent an exodus to local fast food outlets.

Under the government's new regulations for school food, children will have to eat at least one portion of salad or vegetables a day and at least one portion of fruit. They will only be allowed two deep-fried products a week. Choice is not an option - a decision supported by TV chef Jamie Oliver. 'If we are subservient to the kids we will fall down straightaway, without doubt!' he told the media, yesterday. 'I don't think it's about kids' choice.'
