Dental Expert: Is The Dummy Hurting Her Teeth?

child sleeping with dummyCan using a dummy have an effect on adult teeth? Raisingkids.co.uk's Dental Expert, Amanda O'Donnell offers advice.

Raisingkids member's problem
My 21-month-baby uses an orthodontic dummy when she is tired and to get her to sleep. I have noticed her top two front teeth are starting to stick forward from the other teeth, could this be the dummy even though it is orthodontic? Does having crooked first teeth automatically mean she will have crooked adult teeth?

Dental expert's advice
Anything placed in the mouth regularly can cause problems. It may be that the dummy is pushing her teeth forward so I would try and stop the habit. Crooked first teeth do not automatically mean crooked adult teeth but it is important that any dummy habit is stopped before the adult teeth erupt (6-7 years).
