Teenager Expert: Embarassed By Success

teenager playing piano Why are teenagers embarassed by their achievements? Our expert, Chris Turner has the answer.

Raisingkids member's problem
My son has won a second prize in a local piano solo competition recently. He insisted that I not tell his school because he thought his teacher would mention it to other students. He said he knows of other kids who when they won prizes, got talked about in school and now have no friends. He wants to keep his friends and so doesn't want other students to know he had won the prize. Is this normal?

Expert Chris Turner's Advice
Yes perfectly normal, the only people our children want to be proud of them is….yes us parents.

When they have a talent or interest outside the 'norm', they do worry about what their friends might think as it could be seen as losing 'street cred', Don't worry. One day he will feel able to tell his friends, but at the moment just be proud of him and support his talent.

Tell him from me well done and keep it up.
