Online Midwife: Bigger Than Expected

measuring pregnant belly The results of a 20 week scan surprise a reader. Can our midwife Genevieve shed light on the measurements?

Raisingkids member's problem
I've just been for my 20 week scan and was quite surprised by the measurements given for my baby. I was told it is 13 ounces and measures 24.6cm. This seemed quite big for 20 weeks and when my sister checked the 20 week scan of her baby born two years ago she was only 13.8cm - could it be that I am actually more pregnant than I first thought? I don't know whether to make an appointment with my midwife to ask for another scan or are these measurements normal and I'm just carrying a big baby? People have been saying I look quite big for 5 months.

Midwife Genevieve Kingston's Advice
As I'm not a sonographer or obstetrician, I can't comment on what size a baby should be only to say that it's unlikely that if your baby was much bigger than it should be, that it would have gone unreported.

Babies which are much bigger than they should be are always investigated as some of the reasons for inappropriate growth need close monitoring. Your midwife will be monitoring growth throughout the pregnancy. If you are still concerned next time you see her, tell her and she will feel your uterus to see if the baby is much bigger than expected.
