Online Midwife: Expecting twins

baby twins Having found out she's expecting twins, this mother wonders what a note on our scan form means. Our midwife launches an investigation.

Raisingkids member's problem
i had my 12 week scan today and it's twins! But at the bottom of the form it had the LAMDA sign noted. Could you be able to tell me what that means please.

Midwife Genevieve Kingston's Advice
Congratulations! I'm not a radiographer, so I have done my best to discover what LAMDA means. From all that I have been able to access, it is a good thing.

As you are probably aware, there are two types of twin pregnancy, identical, and non identical. Identical twins are formed from the same egg, share a sac within the uterus and share a placenta. Non-identical twins occur from two seperate eggs, have their own sacs, and their own placentas (though these can sometimes look like one as they spread across the uterine wall) Non identical twins develop independently of each other, identical twins can have more problems because they are sharing a placenta.

There is a condition called twin to twin transfusion which can only occur in identical twins. It is not good for either baby and women carrying identical twins are closely monitored for this the entire pregnancy. The presence of the LAMDA sign seems to indicate that twin to twin transfusion should not occur.

However for all my searching, I have been unable to discover whether that means you are carrying identical or non identical twins. The only thing I can say is that it's good news.
