Online Midwife: Getting Bigger With Every Baby?

pregnant woman with child Is it true that the more pregnancies you have, the bigger your belly is each time? Our midwife advises...

Raisingkids member's problem
At my 36 week check up my uterus was measuring 38cm, this is my 3rd child. My first was 6lb 2oz and the second 8lb 7oz. Is it true that the more children you have, the bigger the babies are each time?

Midwife Genevieve Kingston's Advice
The measuring of your uterus is a rough guide, but not an exact science. Nothing seems to be that brilliant at determining birth weight before the baby is born, every method has its flaws! Measuring the uterus is a starting point. Further action will be taken if the measurement is very different but 2cm is not considered significant. Differences can easily occur if the baby is stretched out more at that appointment than at others.

It is certainly not true that each baby is bigger. The only truth is that they are easier to deliver, no matter their size and if your last baby was over 8lbs, then you have nothing to worry about. It is very unlikely that you will tear much beyond what is termed a graze, no matter what the size of the baby, as all of your tissues have been stretched by the previous deliveries.
