Online Midwife: Unusual Discharge

concerned woman Is an unusually large discharge in the last trimester anything to worry about, wonders one mother-to-be

Raisingkids member's problem
I'm 31 and half weeks pregnant with my first baby and over the last two days I have been getting more discharge than normal. It feels as if I'm wetting myself. Is this anything to worry about?

Midwife Genevieve Kingston's Advice
This is very normal. In the weeks running up to term, your discharge should increase. It's a lubricant and if you think about it, your vagina is going to need as much lubrication as it can get! As long as it's clear and doesn't smell then the discharge is normal. It is unlikely to be your waters.

But it's always best to be sure – so phone your DS and tell them that you have a heavy discharge. They may ask you to come in just to check that it isn't your waters that have broken, but don't worry as this is very normal.
