Ask Our Experts: Bitten At Playgroup!

Image Even tiny toddlers can bully and be bullied - what can you do if your child's a victim? Parenting expert and child psychologist Dr Pat Spungin, CEO of Raisingkids.co.uk, advises.

Raisingkids member's problem
My 2 year-old daughter is always being bitten at nursery. The culprit is always the same girl, who is also 2 years old. Any advice on how best to deal with this problem?

Dr Spungin's advice
I suggest you approach their teacher first. Is this child biting other children, or is she singling out your daughter? Toddlers are not very good at sharing and when disputes arise, this child may find that biting helps her get her own way.

See if any other parents are concerned about it and (if so) approach the teacher together in one go, although I would guess the teacher is aware of the problem already. Don't tackle the biter's parents yourself. It's much better to let the teacher deal with the situation and talk to the little girl's parents herself.

Your daughter probably gives the biter a wide berth already so telling her to stay away from her isn't necessary. The teachers and the little girl's parents will find a solution together.
