Ask Our Expert: Afraid To Tell Her She's Adopted

How can you tell your child that she's adopted? Child psychologist Dr. Pat Spungin, suggest some ways to break the news to a pre-teen.

Raisingkids member's problem
My 11 yr-old daughter is adopted but I've never told her. I know I should have done so but somehow, the time never seemed right. Is it too late and will she forgive me for witholding the truth once she knows the facts?

Dr Spungin's advice
It's not too late and I am absolutely certain your daughter will forgive you for not telling her sooner. I'm sure that she knows you love her and that you have done everything for the best.

Contact one of the adoption agencies like BAAF (www.baaf.org.uk) for advice - they have seen the situation before and are there to help. Your revelation is likely to unleash a barrage of questions about what you know about her birth family, why you chose her, etc. so be prepared!
