Baby's '3-Month Colic'
Colic affects about 20% of babies. Colic is usually found in babies aged between
3 weeks to 3 months and most colicky babies cry more in the evening or at nighttime.
If a baby cries over 3 hours a day for at least 3 days a week, most medical experts
will describe this as 'colic' although the cause of colic is not known. Parenting
expert and child psychologist Dr Pat Spungin, CEO of Raisingkids.co.uk, offers
some reassurance.

problem Our 2 week-old baby is great during
the day - he cries, we find the solution and he goes back to sleep! However, from
9pm to approx 1am he just will not settle. His arms and legs thrash around and
feeding, changing, cuddling only settle him for about 10 minutes then he's crying
again. Eventually he gives up and sleeps from about 1am through to about 7am.
Is this pattern normal and what can we do about it? Do you have any advice for
us first-time parents? Dr Spungin's advice
Congratulations on your new baby! Crying in the
evening is very common in newborns. My firstborn cried every night for 3 months
in just the way you describe. The baby book we consulted called it '3-month colic'
and sure enough, at about 3 months it just stopped. Talk to your health visitor,
who will be able to reassure you and maybe give you some tips on how to deal with
it.
