Ask Our Experts: Best Age To Start Tetracycline

Image Tetracycline is used for the prevention and treatment of acne. But when should your child start it? Raisingkids.co.uk's skin specialist, Dr Bernice Krafchik, advises.

Raisingkids member's problem
At what age do you start giving tetracycline for acne in adolescents?

Dr Krafchik's advice
This is a good question, but a difficult one to answer. First it depends on how bad the acne is and how many areas of the body are involved (face, back, chest etc.). If it's just one area, a topical antibiotic cream on the face may do just as well.

Secondly it's important to know that the teeth are set at 8 years so it is safe to use after that - if you use Tetracycline before then, it may stain the teeth. BUT remember it's not a cure and has to be taken for some time. Verall Tetracycline is cheap, safe and effective.
