Ask Our Experts: My Toddler's Got Bandy Legs!

Toddler & beach ball Does early walking harm a toddler's developing legs? Family GP, Dr Sue Morrison, has some words of advice.

Raisingkids member's problem
My toddler has got bandy legs. He started walking early, could he have done himself any damage?

Dr Morrison's advice
Bow-leggedness is normal up to the age of 2 years and the shape of the legs that we recognise as 'normal' is usually established by 6 years old. The shape changes as the angles between the main bones at the knee and hip joints change. However, if bowing of the leg - or in-toeing - is happening on only one side, the child should be checked by their GP to exclude the possibility of abnormality.
