Education Timeline: 4-5 Yr-Olds: Reception

Image The end of the Reception year also spells the end of Foundation Stage education.

The vast majority of children aged between 4-5 yrs-old go through Reception.

Most preschoolers begin attending some form of pre-school or nursery after their 3rd birthday but a few children remain at home until the beginning of Year 1.

Making the transition
Some state-run primary schools start children off with half-day sessions in order to make the transition less traumatic. 9 hours is a very long time for a 4 yr-old to be away from Mum and Dad! Reception staff are qualified teachers and assistants and there must be at least 1 adult for every 13 children.
