Ask Our Experts: Pre-Teen Pimples

Oh no! Not puberty already! Spots are the traditional preserve of teenagers, but what can you do when a pre-teen starts developing pimples? Raisingkids.co.uk's skin specialist, Dr Bernice Krafchik, advises.

Raisingkids member's problem
My son is only 11 and he's already found a couple of small pimples! What type of soap or facial cleanser can he use that won't be too strong for his skin?

Dr Krafchik's advice
It really depends on the son! Most boys don't get worked up about their skin at this age so concerned parents shouldn't do anything without their sons' agreement. Also, boys mature later than girls so don't get too harsh a soap, as it's unlikely to be 'acne' at this stage. Boys with oily skin can use one of the more detergent soaps. If this isn't successful, then try drying out pimples with a benzyl peroxide pad and see how that goes.

There's nothing to prevent pimples, but if pimples get worse, see your doctor and discuss changing to one of the many other treatments available.
