Ask Our Experts: Cheeses During Pregnancy

Say cheese! Along with raw meat, sushi, uncooked eggs and much else besides, doctors recommend avoiding certain cheeses during pregnancy. But which ones? Family GP, Dr Sue Morrison, advises.

Raisingkids member's problem
Which cheeses are safe to eat during pregnancy?

Dr Morrison's advice
The concern about eating cheeses during pregnancy is that some of them contain a bacteria called Listeria.

An infection with this is relatively harmless in an adult but may occationally cause serious infections such as meningitis in a foetus. Avoid unpasteurised cheeses and any 'soft' ones such as Brie, Camembert etc. (this also includes cream cheeses and cottage cheese).

Other foods that are susceptible to listeria are pates and previously-cooked 'chilled' foods e.g pre-washed, bagged salad leaves.
