Has Your Pre-teen Become Less Confident?
The transition from child to adolescent often begins here. Starting
secondary school, academic pressure and a changing body can make this
an unsettling time.
If your normally confident child is feeling insecure,
it's probably a temporary phase. You've got more influence on her than
you might think, and encouragement from you can make a lot of difference.
Listen to her
If she's upset by recent changes, give
her time and undivided attention to talk them through. If it's difficult
to do that in the house without interruption, try going out together for
a walk or take her out for a meal.
But don't sympathise too much!
A sympathetic ear is a great help but
don't reinforce her feelings by sympathising too much ('you poor thing').
Pay lots of attention to her positive qualities and skills. Be upbeat
and positive. Let her know you think very highly of her, and that she
has family and friends who enjoy her company.
