4-9 Yr-Olds Realise They Can't Have It All
Children seem to believe that parents have limitless bank accounts
and sometimes need a gentle reminder about the value of money.
You
don't have to go into details - just explain that you work hard for the
money you earn and it simply won't stretch to buying everything.
Review
realities
Talk about the things your family could buy with the extra money required
for brand name toys or designer labels. Your daughter may be shocked when
she realises how much more these 'cool things' really cost.
Discuss
compromise
If you buy her an expensive T-shirt, will
she settle for chain-store jeans? Perhaps there's something she could
go without to pay for the item she wants. Could she earn money for chores?
Say what you are prepared to pay and if she wants to contribute the rest
from her pocket money, then it's her choice.
Actions
speak louder than words
Are you modeling materialism yourself
by talking about your own designer labels or material aspirations? Are
you bowing to peer pressure? Do you try to keep up with other parents
by throwing expensive birthday parties or splashing out on trendy after-school
activities?
If the answer is 'yes' consider being the parent to break the trend. Use
creative thinking to produce a better, cheaper party. Tell your daughter
why you're doing it and let her give the money you save to a charity of
her choice. Remember, the values you model will ultimately have a far greater
impact on your child than any words.
