Development 7-9 Yrs: Independence & Friends

Image In these middle years your child is caught between a craving for independence and a continued need for parental protection and support.

Your role as the fount of all knowledge and wisdom has unfortunately gone the way of the Easter Bunny!

Rebel without a clue
Your child begins to question your judgement. She may resent adult authority and restrictions on her freedom. She turns to her peers for acceptance but she's easily crushed when their approval is not forthcoming. Although she may seem independent, she needs continual reassurance from you to maintain her confidence level.

Exclusive society
Her friends are still primarily of the same gender, although she is beginning to show interest in the opposite sex. The move to clubs and cliques often results in the exclusion of some children. It's common and usually temporary, but such rejection can be devastating for your child. She needs ongoing support and reassurance from you. You will also want to keep an eye on the situation in case she is being bullied.
