Ask Our Experts: 'Holding In' & Bladder Problems

Loo rolls Toilet training can be tricky. Family GP, Dr Sue Morrison, has some words of advice.

Raisingkids member's problem
My 3 yr-old grand-daughter is being potty trained at home and at nursery school by putting her into pants and hoping that she'll ask when she wants to go.

This has been going on for 2 weeks and she won't use her potty, nor say when she needs it. She just holds on as long as she can and then lets it go. I'm worried this might lead to bladder or bowel problems in the future.

Dr Morrison's advice
Most children are well able to use the toilet by the time they're ready for school. The less anxious parents (or grandparents) are about it, the better the outcome generally. There's no reason to be unduly concerned. I'm sure the nursery school staff, and her mum and dad, are doing a bit more than putting her into trainer pants and hoping for the best. Nursery schools have lots of experience in potty training toddlers and they'll know what it do.

As for bowel and bladder problems in the future, don't worry. There's no evidence that potty training has any bearing on subsequent bladder or bowel problems.
