Breath-Holding:
Dramatic But NOT Dangerous
Breath-holding is really terrifying for parents. It is the nuclear
option in the toddler's armoury. Though it looks bad she won't hurt herself,
so try and ignore it... easier said than done!
About
20% of toddlers use the 'breath-holding tactic'. When thwarted, they hold
their breath, turn blue in the face and lapse into momentary unconsciousness.
Blue
in the face!
At that point, the body switches to automatic pilot and breathing resumes
and the child regains consciousness. The sight of their child turning
blue and refusing to breathe is terrifying for parents, though it is seldom
harmful to the child.
Why
does it happen?
Your toddler is angry that she's been thwarted and this is how she reacts.
It's really no different from any other tantrum, except that it's more
distressing for parents.
Breath-holding tantrums can happen several times
a day but they cause no lasting problems. If you want to stop it, the
treatment is the same as for other forms of tantrums. Don't give in; ignore
it or if possible distract your toddler. Most children grow out of the
habit by the time they go to school.
