3-5 Yrs: Sense Of Right And Wrong
Your child becomes acutely aware of the concept of rules.
She
is not subtle in her interpretation and judges things in black and white,
with no grey areas.
A
sensitive soul...
This new moral sense corresponds with the development of some sensitivity
for other people and their feelings. She may become concerned when a friend
is hurt or upset and try to comfort them.
...or
maybe not!
However, this sensitivity is selective - she may delight in 'name-calling'.
As she approaches 5, she may also begin to ostracise certain children
in her group.
Boys
and girls, mummies and daddies
Children become acutely aware of their own gender during this period.
They identify with the parent of the same sex and take gender specific
roles in games. Girls play at being 'Mummy' and boys take on the father's
role. They also enjoy helping with the chores they associate with that
role.
Some
parents like to direct their children into a broader perception of gender
roles at this point. They do things like encouraging their son to cook,
or their daughter to help fix the car.
The birds and the bees
This is also a stage of genital curiosity. Your child may play with her
genitals and may involve other children in pretend 'doctor' games. This
is natural and normal and nothing to worry about.
