Development 2-3 Yrs: Everything Under Control

Your toddler can string large beads and open small parcels Now your toddler can do a lot more with his hands and learns to dress and undress himself with help.

He is feeding himself, but is still sometimes messy. He also likes to try to manage alone in the toilet.

Your child can draw a rudimentary circle or cross and by 3 years he can draw a person, generally a head with legs. He can build up to 10 bricks in a tower.

Throwing and catching
As he moves through the year, he may begin throwing over-arm and try to catch large balls, holding his arms stiffly out in front. He also has more control over small objects and can string large beads and open small parcels.

Bladder and bowel control
He can control his bowels and bladder during the day but still has difficulty at night. It will be quite a while before you can reliably leave off his nappy at night. However he can probably manage well during the day, with only occasional accidents.

Eating
By the end of the year, your child will probably have his 1st set of teeth. He can now chew well and can share virtually all the family's foods. Although he can give his teeth a preliminary brushing on his own, you will need to supervise carefully and may have to help him finish off the job.
