Development 2-3 Yrs: Running & Jumping

Your child is delighted with his increasing physical abilities and is constantly experimenting, to see how much he can do Over the next 12 months, your toddler gradually changes into a little child with considerable physical abilities.

He races around - on his own feet or by tricycle - and gains more hand dexterity. He is also sleeping much less.

Although his head is still proportionately large for his body, he looks much more like a child than a baby. He will continue to grow longer and slimmer over the year.

Running, jumping, standing on tiptoe
Your child is delighted with his increasing physical abilities and is constantly experimenting, to see how much he can do. He is very physical, he runs, jumps and walks sideways and backwards. He goes upstairs using alternate feet but still places both feet on a stair when walking down. He jumps off steps and tries balancing on curbs on one leg. He may be able to stand on tiptoe if you show him how.

He craves movement
... so take him to the park to play on the slides and climbing frames. Play football with him or tag. Help him to do 'head-over-heels' somersaults. He is discovering the fun of jumping over obstacles and climbing walls or fallen logs. Keep a careful eye on him though! There are likely to be a few mishaps, particularly when he is tired.
