Development
18-24 Mths: Speaking Up
Much of your toddler's learning is now centred round language.
He
can say up to 100 words and sometimes string them together to make simple
2 or 3 word sentences.
Over
the next few months, your toddler's vocabulary will grow to include the
names of most familiar objects, including body parts, clothing and common
animals.
Talk
to your toddler
Although he can't say long sentences, he can understand them. The more
you engage in conversation with him, the better his language development
will be. He listens attentively when spoken to and refers to himself by
name e.g. 'Tom go bed'.
He
may talk continuously to himself as he plays, though what he's saying
is generally incomprehensible to others.
Naming things
Talk to him and he will repeat one or
more stressed words. He is constantly asking the names of objects and
people. He can carry out simple instructions like 'Go and get the teddy'
or 'Show me your rattle'. Later he may be able to answer simple questions
and tell visitors his name or the names of his pets or siblings.
