Development 12-18 Mths: More Independence

There's nothing subtle about your toddler's behaviour right now This is a challenging period! Your toddler is deciding whether she wants to be a baby or an independent individual.

She is clingy and attention-seeking - and then objects when you try to do things for her.

There's nothing subtle about your toddler's behaviour right now. If she feels you aren't paying her sufficient attention, she may physically try to turn your face towards her.

If you continue to pay attention to others, she may get upset and cry. She says 'No' a lot, but desperately wants to please you. Try to be patient.

'Naughtiness'
The so-called 'terrible twos' are just around the corner. Try to establish a simple approach to dealing with naughty behaviour. Give her more attention for good behaviour than you do for bad. She is too young to learn many lessons, but this is one method that's worth starting early.

If there's something you don't want her to do, say 'No!' in a firm stern voice and remove her from the scene. If she persists, be equally persistent. Never give in if she screams and shouts. You only encourage her to carry on. Try to distract her or take her right away into another room. Never smack her.
