Development 12-18 Mths: Say What?

By 18 months, your toddler is making speech-like sounds while he plays Your toddler's vocabulary is increasing rapidly, but he still understands much more
than he can say.

At 15 months, he will use a few recognisable words in the correct context (usually
between 2 and 6 words). He communicates what he wants by pointing, babbling or shouting.

By 18 months he is making speech-like sounds while he plays.

Point-and-name games
He can use up to 20 recognisable words and responds to many more, often echoing the last word of a sentence or words that you stress. He enjoys learning the names of objects. Ask him to hand you some familiar object, and he can do so. He learns to point to body parts or items of clothing, as you name them. When he wants something he will point and may name it.

'Happy talking, talking happy talk...'
Talk to him as much as you can. Simple songs and nursery rhymes are popular and he may try to join in. Share his pleasure in words and watch his vocabulary grow. He is gearing himself up for a massive growth in language in the next few months.
