Is Your Child Picked On At Playgroup?

ImageWhat can you do if your 3 yr-old doesn't want to go to playgroup and complains of being being picked on or bullied?

Most importantly, take your child seriously! Sit down, talk through the problem.

Though you may feel distraught at the thought of your 'baby' being bullied, don't overreact. Make it clear that you support your child. Give lots of reassurance and cuddles - preschoolers often think it's their own fault when they're picked on.

Talk to the teacher - don't delay
Your child needs to know you have listened by seeing you take some action. However angry and upset you feel don't be confrontational - take the softly, softly approach. Chances are the teacher doesn't know anything about it, since most teasing and bullying takes place out of adult earshot. Explain what happened and give the teacher time to find out what is going on.

Trust your instincts
Watch what happens when you drop your toddler off at the playgroup. Does someone come over straight away, or is your child left alone? Check it out - come to collect your toddler early so that you can see what's happening.

Invite some of friends from the playgroup over to play and talk to them about what happens. Keep it low-key. Watch how they play together and see if there might be a problem. Chat to other mothers and ask if their children are unhappy too.
