1-4 Yrs: The Buggy Blog - Boogie Babies

buggy blogger With 3 boys under 5, there’s never a dull moment. Certainly never a quiet one… Buggy Blogger mum to J (4), B (3) and S (1) finds her sons most entertaining.

It's all singing and dancing with knobs on at our place right now (sorry, is that a bit rude?). It takes two to tango and, given the chance, I know which two of mine are generally up for it.

First there's J. He proudly claims that he can Can Can (actually it looks more Cossack to me, but who's checking?) And he loves to demonstrate his PE dance steps – our favourite being the flamboyant Oh là là dance (things have changed a bit since my dreary do-si-do days). And then at a friend's 5th birthday party he … respect … won the dancing competition, scooping up a Spiderman pencil sharpener for his efforts. He's quite clearly a groovy mover with great things awaiting on the horizon (like a mountain of pencil shavings for starters).

When he takes a breather from the dance-floor, J's loves a bit of a sing song too. He can't get enough of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, notwithstanding the fact that it's June. And he's mad for belting out Barbara Ann at top volume, though the Beach Boys' lyrics are rather lost on him as he actually thinks he’s singing about bleating sheep. He also loves to Move it Move it, usually very loud. And usually with me wishing he'd Move it Move it rapidly out of my earshot.

'When it comes to funky dance moves he'll eagerly head-bop to whatever's playing. Who needs rhythm when you've got enthusiasm?'

S won’t be upstaged by his eldest brother, however. When it comes to funky dance moves, he'll eagerly head-bop along to whatever's playing. I think it's more for laughs than for any sense of rhythm. But hey, who needs rhythm when you've got enthusiasm?

And when it comes to singing, I'd give him 10/10 for effort which says it all really (wouldn't want him to try singing it all … ). Putting aside his own vocal experiments, however, he loves listening to music and seems a keen Michael Jackson fan. He giggles uncontrollably at the high-pitched 'yee ha!' which kicks off our compilation CD. Just shows you don't need age and experience to have MJ sussed. You're in good company S; we've all been sniggering at Wacko Jacko for years.

But while the other two are happy giving it plenty in the limelight, B's a little more reluctant. You might occasionally catch him jigging from one leg to the other, but that’s more strictly come bathroom than anything else. And offered the chance to sing along with his siblings on a tedious car journey, B prefers to switch the tape off. (Rather agree with him actually when The Wheels on the Bus loops round for the fifth time.)

Has he got two left feet, is he tone deaf or is it just that he's already in touch with his blokey side? Whatever his reasoning he's probably just hedging his bets.

Though the others might be entertaining to me – and at the moment they certainly appear to be entertaining themselves – eventually the spectre of self-consciousness will descend. Before too long, all three of them will follow the Code of Blokedom, refuse thereafter to put down their pint and set foot on the dance-floor or any karaoke hotspot.

Sigh, better hold that call to the Italia Conti Academy admissions line then.
