15-17 Yrs: Sex & Relationships
Many teens are dating by this age and some enter into very close and
passionate relationships. Your teenager may take his romance extremely
seriously and is likely to react angrily to suggestions that he's experiencing
'puppy love'.
With
all these new, exciting feelings, it's easy for your teenager to get carried
away, both emotionally and physically.
Establishing an identity
Don't take it for granted he'll start dating a
member of the opposite sex. In establishing his sexual identity, your
teenager may explore different types of relationships. It's normal, and
it's important for him to feel that he can talk to you about what he's
doing and who he's seeing. If he doesn't feel ready for a relationship
yet, that's perfectly normal too.
When love breaks down
Your teen may invest a considerable amount
of emotional energy in a relationship and may lose interest in other aspects
of life, including friends and schoolwork. This can make a breakup very
difficult for him. He may become intensely depressed and may need considerable
support. Accept that he is grieving for the loss of a loved one. Don't
be afraid to seek help if his depression becomes extended or severe.
