Development 13-15 Yrs: Friends & Romance
Many teens develop very close friendships within their own gender.
Most also develop an intense interest in the opposite sex, although he
may not be ready for relationships.
Your son may worship from afar, yearning for
a relationship but not actually willing or able to begin one.
As girls mature sooner, your daughter may begin
to spend time with slightly older boys. Some girls begin to engage in
sexual activity at around this age, although many do not.
Better safe than sorry
However, teenagers of both sexes should know about
contraception and safe sex. If you don't
feel like broaching the topic yourself, sites like Brook
Online (www.brook.org.uk) can provide information and advice.
Awkward and self-conscious
Your teen becomes completely preoccupied
with his life, his friends and his development. He feels awkward and self-conscious
and is easily embarrassed. Many teens also worry about making mistakes,
particularly in front of their peers. They are afraid of revealing their
vulnerability and 'failing' the move into independence.
