Ask Our Experts: I Want To Go Back To Work But My Old Job Was Too Pressured

stressful job Staying at home may not be a financial option once you have a baby, but changing jobs might help. Raisingkids.co.uk's guest expert Denise Robertson offers advice on finding a new job to suit new parenthood.

Raisingkids member's problem
I'm thinking of going back to work, but I don't want to go back to my old job - too pressured and the hours were too long. I worked as a solicitor but I'm not sure what I could do now?

Denise Robertson's advice
You really need to think about what will make you happy. If you want to tap into your existing skills then perhaps work in the field of local government or the media where your legal skills would be an advantage.

Alternatively, you may decide that this is the perfect time to strike out anew and give real thought to retraining for a different role. Think about what you most enjoy doing and what you think you are really good at and seek advice from others.

Don’t forget to consider things like the working hours of the job and how they’ll fit in with your commitments at home.

Returning to work part time may be another option as this will enable you to regain your work confidence whilst still being able to spend time with your child. Whatever you do, don’t rush into making any decisions, take your time and discuss your options with your family and friends, they are there to offer you support and advice too - you are not on your own.
