Development 10-12 Mths: Laugh & Play

Your baby is becoming more assertive - particularly with siblings. He objects when other children receive more attention, even pushing in between you and the rivals. Increased confidence leads to inquisitiveness too.

His sense of humour is developing and he'll laugh at a funny toy or picture. He's also generous with affection, enthusiastically hugging and kissing you. He may also kiss soft toys or dolls and even live cats or dogs, so watch him closely with animals. Show him how to stroke them gently.

Now where did I put it?
He understands that an object can be hidden and will spend time searching for it. He also begins to understand concepts such as up and down, and big and small. Some babies can start sorting by size or colour. Help him to build towers with bricks. Give him containers with lids that he can open. Let him practise putting objects inside and watch him discover that some objects are too big to fit.

Friends and strangers
Your baby's memory has grown considerably and he's now able to recognise some individuals, even when he hasn't seen them for several days. He prefers some people to others and may make his feelings clear.

He's still shy with strangers and may cry if they fuss over him. However, he's becoming quicker to warm up to them. Advise visitors not to pay too much attention - he'll often sidle up to them within a couple of hours.
