Development 10-12 Mths: Up & About

He's off! Your baby is suddenly into everything. You can't take your eyes off him for a minute - not when there's a fascinating world out there to explore!

Coordination is developing - watch how he twists round to wave when crawling or climbing. He can also reach for objects with one hand when standing or walking with support.

Upstairs, downstairs
He learns to climb up and down stairs and onto chairs - and sometimes out of his cot. A few minor bruises are inevitable during this stage. Try not to panic - they're part of the learning experience.

Standing on my own two feet
He learns to pull himself up then - one day - stands alone! That's only part of the story. He got up, but now has to get down again. He stands perplexed, wobbles and then sits down on his bottom with a thud! He soon sorts this out and then he's up and down all the time. He may even learn to stand up from a squatting position, without support. Some babies start walking at around a year, with the support of furniture or your hand. A handful may even take a few steps alone.

Remember...
Babies develop at different rates. Some babies will start to walk and talk very early, whereas others take their time. The rate of development means nothing, sooner or later all healthy babies will walk and talk, so don't worry. Your health visitor and local clinic will do developmental checks and reassure you that your child is developing normally.
