Development 7-9 Mths: Learning To Talk

IMAGE: Your baby is learning to link things she sees with sounds, and may turn towards a familiar noise. Did you know... babies as young as 7 months can understand basic rules of grammar?

Your baby's also beginning to understand some words and may respond to very simple commands.

Listen up!
She'll shout to get your attention, listen... then shout again! Some babies begin to shake their heads to communicate 'No!' She listens intently when you speak and may imitate sounds, repeating them in a continuous stream. She learns to link syllables and when praised, may repeat her new 'words'. Your baby is also learning to link things she sees with sounds, and may turn towards a familiar noise.

It's good to talk
Pre-speech continues and your baby repeats sounds over and over, beginning to link syllables like choo-choo, da-da, ma-ma. In babies with impaired hearing, babble may not develop much beyond this stage. If you're at all concerned, consult a doctor or your local clinic to arrange a hearing test.
